The 2014 Sochi Olympics: Ladies Figure Skating Short Program
Saturday night, the ladies of figure skating took to the ice to perform their short program for the judges. Skaters included USA’s Ashley Wagner, Russia’s Julia Lipnitskaya, Canada’s Kaetlyn Osmond, Japan’s Mao Asada, and Italy’s Carolina Kostner, and while their skating was top-notch, their costumes were gold medal worthy.
1. Ashley Wagner
Skating to Shine On You Crazy Diamond by Pink Floyd, Ashley Wagner chose this black dress with silver detailing all throughout the bodice. The dress being the focal point, I love how she chose a slick ponytail as the hairstyle and brought a pop of color with some red lipstick to balance out the overall dark tenor of the dress.
2. Julia Lipnitskaya
While her spins were mind-blowing and jumps stupendous, it was the dress that made Russian’s skating prodigy’s performance one to watch. Dancing to You Don’t Give Up On Love by Mark Minkov, Julia Lipnitskaya wore this gorgeous blue and black crystal embedded long sleeve dress. I’m obsessed with the blue ombre-inspired look throughout the bodice and black see through sleeves. Totally age appropriate for a 15 year old, but equally elegant and sophisticated for the Olympic games.
3. Kaetlyn Osmond
Representing Canada, Kaetlyn Osmond skated to Big Spender and Rich Man’s Frug from Sweet Charity in this monochromatic ensemble, comprising of a black dress and long black finger gloves. I adore the simplicity of the dress with the added touch of the gloves, and love the choice of elevating the look of the outfit with a bold red lip color.
4. Mao Asada
Mao Asada represented Japan in this lovely pastel colored dress. Differentiating from most of the figure skaters who performed in dark colors, Mao Asada chose to skate in this sparkling and feminine dress consisting of colors ranging from a pretty periwinkle to a deep burgundy. I love the choice of keeping the makeup and hair at a minimum, as the dress itself consists of so much intricate detail and design.
5. Carolina Kostner
Last but certainly not least is Italian skater Carolina Kostner, who skated in this girly and light white sparkling dress with a deep slit throughout the front. I love the eccentric touch of the plunging neckline as well as an insert of conservatism with the long sleeves. Girly, bold, and tasteful all encompassed in one outfit.
