The Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics: Opening Ceremony

This year kicked off with one of the biggest sporting events in the world, the 2014 Winter Olympics, where some of the greatest athletes from all around the globe came to show their team spirit in Sochi, Russia.

During the opening ceremony, 88 nations were present at the Parade of Nations and exemplified their countries in an array of patriotic uniforms.

From muted and simple outfits to loud and daring costumes, here are some of the most memorable garments from the 2014 Sochi Olympics.

1. Russia

As the host nation, the Russians did not disappoint. Accompanied by a standing ovation and ceaseless roars from the crowd, the Russians showed devotion to their country with these outstanding red pants and striking fur-lined coats worn by the women, and, while not pictured here, turtleneck sweaters and blue double-breasted jackets by the men.

2. Italy

I am all about the simplicity and class of Italy’s uniform. I love the navy blue color, the white lining of the suit, and I can’t stop obsessing over the fact that their hoods are essentially their nations flag.

3. Spain

I love the preppy and tailored look of this ensemble by Spain. From the button down jackets and berets to the gorgeous maroon and yellow colors, this outfit embodies excellence.

4. Canada

Three C’s for Canada: cute, classic, and comfy. I love the minimalism of the black pants and red jackets, complete with the modest mark of nation pride with their “Canada” daubed hats.

5. Germany

How could I not mention Germany? Their rainbow-inspired outfits are currently making headlines and whether or not Germany’s trying to make a political statement here, I think these outfits are exceptionally valiant and cheerful.

6. Mexico

Besides the fact that Mexico and Italy’s outfits bear striking similarities, I adore the formality of the white button up shirt and the red tie combined with the casualness of the tracksuit and sneakers. Bravo, Mexico!

7. The United States of America

I don’t care what anybody says about the USA outfits being a bit too audacious; I think they are AMAZING. Whether it’s the red, white, and blue combination, the stars and stripes splashed all over that cardigan, or the hat with the word “USA” plastered on the front, this outfit just shouts patriotism and it is nothing short of perfection. Plus, how cute is that Olympic rings patch?
